Gosling Got it Right

Chris Aniszczyk claims James Gosling got it wrong in comparing OSGI and Jigsaw. He claims that he should educate himself before commenting.

If James wants to talk about OSGi, he should learn more about it first, otherwise he perpetuates misconceptions that help no one. I think we all agree that modularity is a good thing for the software industry and we should be working together to push that concept forward.

Frankly, Chris should go listen to the Java Posse interview with the Jigsaw team. Mark Reinhold and Alex Buckley very clearly explain that big is not in the physical sense, but in the organizational sense. They wanted to work with them and tried for two years. Unfortunately, the OSGI organization is a large organization with many players. They simply could not move fast enough to make the changes that Jdk7 required. There are some real technical differences. The process of getting OSGI to adopt them, even if all the players agreed, was taking years. Not everyone can wait on that kind of timeline. So, OSGI is too BIG. Gosling got it right. However, he means big as in project size, not binary size.

Chris, please research both sides next time.
