Well put. The netbook OS world is new and not dominated at all by MS just yet. As a matter of fact, most first generation netbooks came with linux distributions, and speaking as someone with a netbook using Xandros, I'm very optimistic about the Google OS future. As a matter of note, i recently read that MS has created a version of Windows 7 for this market specifically, Windows 7 NB (Netbook), leading one to believe that MS is aware of their absenteeism and vulnerability in the market.

Thinking about the public's use of it, I've successfully taught construction workers (ie. computer illiterates) to use Linux distros (fedora and other similar distros) and suspect this is more where they are gearing their OS to. Google has been notorious for making things that are simple, fast and easy to learn, I don't expect their OS to differ much from this style. I could be wrong, but expect that how easy it is to learn will be very important to its success or failure.

by the way, when i say evidence to support claims i mean things like this that completely disprove your made up data.

-from Gigaom; data by comScore, 44k active convos is also the number given by the NY Times
“976 [thousand] have the google talk application installed on their computer, 44 [thousand] of that total have engaged in IM talks.”

the same could be said for your MS teet suckling. I enjoy the services google provides, but am far from a fanboy. You should try presuming less about others to try to make your point as you've provided no evidence to your claims. You have assumed data only. Find me some real data and we'll talk. As it stands, MS has been on a muddy slope for several years and other vendors are starting to take advantage of it. Holding onto a dead ideal even after its no longer relevant is both useless and sad. Your "reality" that MS is all things computing is just as dilluted as "my supposed Google-reality" (i quote this as its your opinion of my reality, not my own).

If you have any data or proof to support your points, i'll be glad to hear them, but please do not assume to know me or my thought patterns when it comes to the computing industry. You have no idea who I am as a person and I'd appreciate you reserving your commentary on that subject. I've made no comment on your personal identity or tendencies and would like the same courtesy.

Google Talk? bahhaa. Is there even 5 people on the freaking planet that even use Google Talk?

I'm not even sure that Gmail has more users than Hotmail.

But seriously, if you think that Google has any chance in their retarded webOS endeavors than I've got a bridge to sell you.

Twinfeld, leave the gushing google fanboyism alone for a bit. Deal with reality

twinfield, You're living in some alternative reality, because Google has never successfully competed with Microsoft. Search was never something that Microsoft actively pursued until recently.

On the other hand Google is failing miserably with the Google browser and will fail again with their pathetic webOS disaster.

Sorry, I was trying to be funny. (a bit unuccessful). Personally, I don't think that google has to compete with Microsoft on their own turf. I think that this is a new space. Microsoft will get a lot of carry over from their PS OS dominance. However, google can do well. They don't need to dominate. Remember, at least in my opinion, google is not trying to become a dominant OS vendor. They just want to make sure that HTML 5 wins the GUI wars (RIA).

Actually, your over optimistic approach to this chrome os thing is the evidence that it will fail miserably like the Chrome browser itself which is used by almost noone on earth.

@rick time will reveal the foolishness of saying that Google can't compete with MS. They have already done so and won. Not to mention that MS is now trying to compete with Google and its omni-powerful search engine with their pitiful bing.com

Also...
"Microsoft became a monopoly because a single vendor could best meet the needs of the largest number customers by imposing standards." -from referenced article.

This makes me chuckle just a bit being that MS is the biggest non-conformist in the computing industry when it comes to standards. Lets not forget that Windows runs in the IE explorer browser and we all know how well IE plays with common standards.

It should also be noted that MS will constantly be at a disadvantage in the developer market (which is the biggest target of Chrome OS). Corporate training is extremely narrow in scope, relevance and transferability. Universities across the world are churning out highly talented graduates skilled in program that are trained in distributed and core system programming on Unix/Linux environments primarily (some Sun systems here and there). The business sector is becoming aware of this and has realized that paying several thousands of dollars to these already trained programmers through MS certifications is, in most cases; a glorious waste of money.

All knowledge is emergent, thus established views will always fall.
